FAQs
What is the cost?
$250/month for full access to all tools, which includes a lockable 2.5' by 6' locker, which provides privacy and some dust mitigation. Join with a friend - a second member is only $125/month extra (sharing your locker). Guests are free, but they are not allowed to use the power tools. They can help with holding things, hand sanding, moral support, etc.
What are the hours? Does it get busy?
24/7 - each member gets their own keycard. The most people we've had simultaneously in the shop is 4, and we have more than one of most tools. We have 7 centrally located benches, so everyone gets their own space to work when present.
How big is the shop?
~4000 square feet, including ~1000 square feet of "clean space" for the painting, lounge, and conference rooms.
How does this work?
You come in anytime you like, find an open bench (we have at least 7 of them), grab your stuff from your locker, and get to work. When you're finished, just clean up after yourself, turn off the lights, and arm the alarm (super easy) on your way out.
Are there any woodworking stores nearby?
Yes! We are less than 5 minutes from Home Depot, Menards, Rockler, Harbor Freight, and Forest Products (for exotic woods).
What if my lumber doesn't fit in my locker?
There are storage racks for lumber and plywood available for all, just put your name on it so we know who owns it!
What if my project doesn't fit in my locker?
No problem! We have several out-of-the-way corners where you can leave it while you're working on it (or if the paint/glue is wet). Please try to be frugal with this use of space, so far we haven't had a problem but if space gets tight we could implement a reservation system.
What is the air quality?
The shop is climate-controlled year-round to 70-73 degrees. Most machines have 0.5-micron filtered dust collection, and the sanding room has multiple HEPA filters. The finishing room and front office space are separately ventilated (and are separate rooms), so dust in those spaces is minimized. We recommend wearing a mask for the health of your lungs.
What about safety?
Eye protection is required when running power tools. Hearing protection and dust masks are also a good idea. We provide goggles and headphones (but you can also bring your own). We are in a safe neighborhood, and the building doors are always locked (all windows have blinds, so no one can even tell you're there). We use a monitored alarm system for when no one is in the shop.
Can I bring in old/reclaimed wood?
Generally no - Tom tries to keep all tools working their best, meaning sharp, properly adjusted, and clean. Old/reclaimed wood is typically dirty and may contain nails or other contaminants that can dull or damage the tools.
Can I do painting/finishing?
Yes, non-volatile finishes only (we can't exhaust fumes).
Any free stuff available?
Yes! We have lots of scrap wood, from construction lumber to plywood to exotics. We also provide some supplies, like glue, paper towels, blades, etc.
Are classes offered?
Yes! Free classes for members are held on-demand. Orientation on proper operation of all tools is also provided for free.
Are discounts available?
We have wholesale contracts with Aetna Plywood and MAS epoxies, so we can order whatever you need and even deliver it to the shop. We also have supplies on-site available for member purchase.
What if I need help?
Just ask! All members are more than happy to help answer questions, and Tom is available by phone any time.
What if a tool breaks?
Please let Tom know so he can fix it. If it's something easy to fix that you're comfortable doing yourself, for example replacing a band saw blade, you're welcome to do so. Tom also provides free training on how to change blades, etc.
Am I required to do any shop work?
Please put the tools you use away when finished, and if you make a mountain of sawdust please sweep it up. In general, try to leave the place as clean as you found it! Tom does the main cleaning and maintenance, like overall sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, and cleaning/tuning the tools.
